{"id":775,"date":"2009-12-03T13:26:57","date_gmt":"2009-12-03T19:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/?p=775"},"modified":"2009-12-03T13:26:57","modified_gmt":"2009-12-03T19:26:57","slug":"lanzarotearrecife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/?p=775","title":{"rendered":"Lanzarote\/Arrecife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even though they did not raise the sails when we left for Lanzarote, we<a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Moon-Jupiter.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-777 alignright\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Moon-Jupiter-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a> did have another beautiful sight that evening.\u00a0 The moon and Jupiter were well placed in the sky and made quite a show.<\/p>\n<p>Lanzarote is a volcanic island with a long history.\u00a0 It was first settled by the Phoenicians in 1100BC and the Greeks, Romans and Egyptians were all familiar with it.<\/p>\n<p>We only had a short stopover in Arrecife, the capital, and the only tour offered <a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/ArrecifeHarbor.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-778 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/ArrecifeHarbor-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>was billed as <em>Very Strenuous<\/em>.\u00a0 We opted instead to tour the city and explorer the area around the port.\u00a0 The shopping area was nothing particularly exciting but we did see some interesting sites.\u00a0 \u00a0 This sight intrigued us but were unable (with our limited command of Spanish) to find out exactly what it was.\u00a0 As best we could determine it was some sort of park or resort out on a small island connected to the main island via a causeway.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/CastleSanGabriel.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-780\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/CastleSanGabriel-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Another feature of the port was <em>Castillo de San Gabriel<\/em> which was built in 1573 as a defense against pirates.\u00a0 This was, to me, a very different from other castles we have visited, being quite low and rather small.\u00a0 I was also a bit disappointed with the cannons<a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/CastleSanGabriel2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-776\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/CastleSanGabriel2-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"CastleSanGabriel2\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a> on display as they were clearly more modern (breach-loaders) than the castle itself.\u00a0\u00a0 The small island where the castle was located was connected to the main island by a drawbridge built sometime later.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Dolphin.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-779\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Dolphin-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Dolphin\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Our next destination was Agadir Morocco and we sailed from Lanzarote shortly after noon on 11\/23.\u00a0 Along the way that afternoon we were joined by a group of dolphins who played in the wake of the ship.\u00a0 I found them rather hard to photograph but did manage one good image.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even though they did not raise the sails when we left for Lanzarote, we did have another beautiful sight that evening.\u00a0 The moon and Jupiter were well placed in the sky and made quite a show.
