{"id":743,"date":"2009-12-01T13:12:35","date_gmt":"2009-12-01T19:12:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/?p=743"},"modified":"2009-12-01T13:12:35","modified_gmt":"2009-12-01T19:12:35","slug":"las-palmas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/?p=743","title":{"rendered":"Las Palmas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/LasPalmas.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-749 alignright\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/LasPalmas-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>We arrived at Las Palmas on Gran Canaria Island\u00a0 at 8am the next morning\u00a0 Las Palmas is the capital of the Canary Islands (alternating with Santa Cruz.)<\/p>\n<p>We had an early breakfast as we were scheduled for a &#8220;Panoramic Tour&#8221; of the island starting at 8:30.\u00a0 That tour took us on\u00a0 some of the narrowest, steepest and most twisty roads I have ever seen.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Caldera.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-748\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Caldera-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>The bus took us up to a point overlooking the &#8220;Crater of Bandam&#8221;, a volcanic caldera that was left from an eruption 5000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Then we visited a town called Teror &#8211; the guide had to tell us how the people living there were known as <a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Teror.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-751\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Teror-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>&#8220;Terorists.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 It was Sunday so they were performing mass in <em>Bas\u00edlica de Nuestra<\/em><em> Se\u00f1ora del Pino. <\/em>Because of that we only saw it from the outside.\u00a0 At the same time there was the weekly market going on in the streets around the Basilica.\u00a0 We wandered around there seeing everything for sale from cotton candy and roast chestnuts\u00a0 to <a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/TerorFair.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-746 alignleft\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/TerorFair-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>clothing and jewelry. We also sampled a local product &#8211; Honey Rum.\u00a0 Quite good though\u00a0 very sweet &#8211; a small amount was enough.<\/p>\n<p>Next we went on to Arucas which is in an area of banana farms and famous for <a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Arucas.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-747\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/Arucas-98x150.jpg\" alt=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"98\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The Church of San Juan Bautista.\u00a0 An impressive structure built from local stone with many intricate carvings.\u00a0 Construction was begun in 1909 and only finished recently.\u00a0 Again, mass was being conducted so we did not go inside.<\/p>\n<p>Finally we returned to Las Palmas but before going to the ship we stopped by the marina to see the start of a huge yacht race.\u00a0 This race starts in Las Palmas and ends up at St. Lucia in <a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/SailRace.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-750\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/12\/SailRace-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"Click to enlarge\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>the Caribbean.\u00a0 We were told that there were 250 boats starting out that day (11\/22) and that they would cover the 2700 nautical miles in about 3 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>We returned to the ship just in time for a late lunch and spent the remainder of the day lounging by the pool and getting to know more of our fellow passengers.\u00a0 We sailed for Lanzarote at 7pm and once again, because of weather conditions, they did not raise the sails. \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 0.79in } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We arrived at Las Palmas on Gran Canaria Island\u00a0 at 8am the next morning\u00a0 Las Palmas is the capital of the Canary Islands (alternating with Santa Cruz.)
