{"id":1339,"date":"2011-07-02T10:22:26","date_gmt":"2011-07-02T16:22:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/?p=1339"},"modified":"2011-07-02T10:22:26","modified_gmt":"2011-07-02T16:22:26","slug":"back-in-the-paddle-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/?p=1339","title":{"rendered":"Back In The Paddle Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Or &#8211; I Can Row, Canoe?<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Back in the &#8217;70s and &#8217;80s we spent a lot of time canoeing on local Iowa rivers.\u00a0 Nearly every nice weekend between Memorial Day and Labor Day would find us on the water.\u00a0\u00a0 Sometimes it was just Jan and I in one canoe, but often it was with a group of from 3 to 20 canoes and up to 50 people in the group.\u00a0\u00a0 Often we would camp along the river on sand bars or islands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For several reasons we have not continued this practice into the &#8217;90s and &#8217;00s.\u00a0 Just recently my two sons (Steev, Allan and partners) were here for a visit and we decided to get out on the river again.\u00a0 Here is a picture of the group (minus Jan who took the photo.)\u00a0 L. to R. Jeannette, Allan, Steev, Greta and me.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1346 aligncenter\" style=\"margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px;\" title=\"Canoe-Group\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Canoe-Group.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">We rented canoes at a nearby County park which also provided us with all the needed gear and transported us to the put-in point.\u00a0 Here is the trailer load of canoes ready to head upstream.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1341\" style=\"margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px;\" title=\"Canoes\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Canoes.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">It didn&#8217;t take long to get to the put-in and within half and hour we were on the river without incident.\u00a0 Here is Steev and Greta underway.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1345\" style=\"margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px;\" title=\"Steev-Greta-Canoe\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Steev-Greta-Canoe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And here are Allan and Jeannette.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1342\" style=\"margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px;\" title=\"Allan-Jeannette\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Allan-Jeannette.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">One of the things that makes canoeing in a group extra fun is being able to barge all the canoes together and just float (with minor steering when needed.)\u00a0 Jan particularly likes this\u00a0 because she can just sit in the canoe and, as she puts it, &#8220;play hostess-mostess.&#8221;\u00a0 Here she is in action.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1347\" style=\"margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px;\" title=\"Barged\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Barged.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Another feature of many of our canoe trips is the lunch stop.\u00a0 When we had estimated that we had covered half the distance to the takeout, we found a {relatively) dry sand bar and beached our canoes.\u00a0 Here is our simple setup for our picnic lunch.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1343\" style=\"margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px;\" title=\"Lunch-Spot\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Lunch-Spot.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After lunch a few of us decided to take a dip in the river.\u00a0 It&#8217;s quite shallow and the bottom here was sandy.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1344\" title=\"Swimming\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Swimming.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"297\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The rest of the trip was pleasant though we had a strong headwind which made paddling a little more difficult but we still completed the trip in about 5 hours.\u00a0 In another hour we were home again and some of us decided on a little apres-canoe soak in the hot tub.\u00a0 A great ending for a fun day.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1340\" style=\"margin-top: 4px; margin-bottom: 4px;\" title=\"Apres-Canoe\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/Apres-Canoe.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"440\" height=\"293\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Or &#8211; I Can Row, Canoe?
