{"id":1204,"date":"2011-03-08T15:34:28","date_gmt":"2011-03-08T21:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/?p=1204"},"modified":"2011-03-08T15:34:28","modified_gmt":"2011-03-08T21:34:28","slug":"winter-vacation-2011-part-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/?p=1204","title":{"rendered":"Winter Vacation 2011 \u2013 Part 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We arrived at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St_barths\" target=\"_blank\">St. Barths<\/a> around 8:00 am and anchored out in the harbor.\u00a0 St. Barths is a wealthy island and some of the most spectacular and expensive <a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Sister-Ship.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1205\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to Enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Sister-Ship-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>ships come here. Here is our sister ship, the Wind Surf which was also in the harbor.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Yacht-A.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1206\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to Enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Yacht-A-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>Anchored a short distance from the Wind Spirit was, what is called the most expensive yacht in the world. It&#8217;s simply named <a href=\"http:\/\/yachtpals.com\/mega-yacht-a-9129\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Yacht A<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The island is also well known among aircraft pilots for it&#8217;s tricky and demanding airport.\u00a0 Here are some<a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/images?q=%22Gustaf+III+Airport%22&amp;hl=en&amp;num=10&amp;lr=&amp;cr=&amp;safe=images&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=9VN2TZrQPIOI0QGV5KDWBg&amp;ved=0CDMQsAQ&amp;biw=964&amp;bih=692\" target=\"_blank\"> Google Images <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/images?q=%22Gustaf+III+Airport%22&amp;hl=en&amp;num=10&amp;lr=&amp;cr=&amp;safe=images&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;source=univ&amp;sa=X&amp;ei=9VN2TZrQPIOI0QGV5KDWBg&amp;ved=0CDMQsAQ&amp;biw=964&amp;bih=692\" target=\"_blank\">of the airport<\/a> &#8211; note that the end of the runway goes right into the sea!<\/p>\n<p>That morning Jan, I and two new friends Romaine and Warren caught one of the first tenders to the dock so we could take a taxi<a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/St-Barths-Map.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1208\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to Enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/St-Barths-Map-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a> tour of the island.\u00a0 One striking thing was everything seemed clean and in good repair, a contrast to other islands.\u00a0 The taxi ride was spectacular.\u00a0 Here is a map showing where we went that day.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Resort-St-Barths.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1211\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to Enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Resort-St-Barths-150x112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"112\" \/><\/a>Here is one of the many beach resorts on the island.\u00a0 All of them looked like they were a minimum of four stars. \u00a0 Probably quite expensive too. <a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Tour-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1212\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to Enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Tour-1-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And here is one of the smaller villages with a great view of the surf and a neighboring island.<\/p>\n<p>Off one of these beaches there was a windsurfer doing his thing.\u00a0 It looks like fun but I doubt my old body could take it.<a href=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Wind-Surfer.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1213\" style=\"margin: 4px;\" title=\"Click to enlarge\" src=\"https:\/\/tom.hise.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/Wind-Surfer-150x100.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a> After the tour Jan, Romaine and Warren all wanted to go shopping but I decided to return to the ship, get a beer by the pool and read.<\/p>\n<p>This was the night when Jan and I had reservations\u00a0 at &#8216;Candles&#8217;, for a meal on deck with just the two of us.\u00a0 We were hoping for a romantic evening but the ambient light on the ship spoiled the effect somewhat.<\/p>\n<p>The next day was to be our Catamaran\/Snorkel excursion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We arrived at St. Barths around 8:00 am and anchored out in the harbor.\u00a0 St. Barths is a wealthy island and some of the most spectacular and expensive ships come here.
